Earth Energy, Ancestral Wisdom, and the Power of Slowing Down
Earth, the element associated with the North direction, is the greatest form of support we have. Literally.
She holds us.
Feeds us.
Shelters us.
Offers beauty without hesitation.
We came from her.
And one day, we will return to her.
The North direction represents grounding, stability, ancestral wisdom, and the quiet power of death and rebirth. It is the ancient forest. The rich soil. The dark cave. The soft moss beneath bare feet.
North is the place where we remember who we are.
What Does the North Direction Represent?
Symbolically, the North direction is associated with:
-
Earth energy
-
Wisdom and guidance
-
Death and rebirth
-
Stability and endurance
-
The Crone archetype
-
Ancestral knowledge
Within feminine archetypes, Earth is the wise old Crone- the keeper of the “old ways,” the one who holds the secrets of those who walked before us.
North does not shy away from hardship (even though she can be challenging for us to be with her.) She is honest. At times eruptive. But her purpose is always strengthening.
She asks us to shed the outdated stories that were never ours to carry.
She asks us to let what needs to die, die.
So something truer can grow.
The Energy of North in Nature
Imagine yourself walking through an ancient forest.
Towering evergreens surround you.
The scent of damp earth and decomposing wood fills your lungs.
Mushrooms and moss soften the ground beneath your feet.
Light filters through pine, cypress, and hemlock branches.
You are not judged here.
You are not rushed here.
You are not performing here.
Quite the opposite!
You feel calm.
Grounded.
Supported.
Clear-headed.
This is the energy of North.
The Crone Archetype and the Wisdom of Darkness
The old woman who forages for herbs and mushrooms.
The old woman who drinks her ayahuasca tea to cleanse her soul.
The old woman who cooks her food over an open flame.
The old woman who lets the beauty of her body be seen by the moon.
The old woman who has let her tears wash over her like a baptism.
The old woman who has seen the darkness in every corner and has allowed it to make her wiser.
This is North.
How to Work With the Energy of North in Daily Life
North governs the physical realm:
Your body.
Your home.
Your environment.
Your belongings.
She invites reverence for these things.
For many of us, especially mothers and busy women, this is the hardest work. Slowing down. Tending to our body gently. Caring for our space without urgency.
But grounding begins in the physical.
Here are a few reflection prompts to explore the energy of North in your own life:
-
What are three ways I can slow down and step outside the hustle?
-
What simple daily rituals can I practice to honor my body?
-
Are there ancestral rituals or traditions I feel called to reclaim?
-
Is there darkness in a relationship that North’s stability could help me explore safely?
You might journal on these.
Walk in nature with them.
Sip tea and let the answers arrive slowly.
You get to pick what feels good.
Grounding Rituals Inspired by the North Direction
If you want to work more intentionally with North energy, start simple:
-
Stand barefoot on the earth and take three slow breaths.
-
Light a candle and sit in quiet reflection.
-
Declutter one small area of your home with care.
-
Use scent as a sensory anchor to return to your body.
Grounding rituals do not need to be elaborate. In reality, it's better if they're not- because then you can be consistent- and that's what matters.
Bringing the Energy of North Into Your Space
Because scent speaks directly to memory and the nervous system, it can be a powerful way to embody the grounding symbolism of North.
North, our grounding aromatherapy spray, was inspired by this direction and its connection to Earth energy, steadiness, and clarity. Crafted with essential oils traditionally associated with grounding and emotional stability, it offers a simple way to pause and return to yourself during overwhelming moments.

A Direction to Return To
North is not a place you reach once and stay.
It's a part of the larger spiral and a space you return to.
It's not what I would call the "easiest" direction because of what it can ask of you- reflection, release, rebirth.... which all come with their fair share of sacrafice.
But amidst that, North is here when you need stability, clarity, or to feel your roots again.
Sometimes, grounding isn’t about doing more.
It’s about standing still long enough to feel supported.
